(Scroll down for video) Police are looking to arrest and charge those behind several fires that broke out during a flight from Australia to the United Arab Emirates, police in the United Arab Emirates said.
Abu Dhabi Police said that they arrested twelve passengers for questioning after multiple fires were lit on board a flight out of Melbourne on Monday night.
The incidents occurred on an Etihad Airways flight, and the airline said that it was cooperating fully with the police investigation.
The flight was forced to make an emergency landing at an airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, before arriving four hours later at the Abu Dhabi airport, where police were alerted and began to search for suspects.
According to passengers, multiple fires burned in the airplane’s toilets.
The series of small fires filled the cabin with smoke, and passengers panicked.
The cabin crew locked all the toilets and passengers were confined to their seats. Food and beverage services were also stopped.
One passenger recalled how she suddenly awoke to the sound of a loud alarm, flashing red lights and flight crew running around.
She saw flames coming out of the trash can in the toilet, and two crew members putting out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
