A lawyer was arrested for questioning after she allegedly tortured her underage housekeeper, police in Nigeria said.
The lawyer of Calabar Cross River, was identified as Florence Ujinka, and her 13-year-old housekeeper was identified as Chidera Asonye Nathaniel. Ujinka is accused of using an old commercial fan belt to beat Nathaniel.
Police received a complaint about the woman from the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a children’s rights group. The group told police that according to their investigation, the woman and her husband hired Nathaniel in 2012, and the child has been subjected to torture and inhuman treatment ever since.
The woman’s husband is a local doctor. Charges are still pending.
Last month, a boy called police and told them that he was hungry.
Virginia police officers went to the boy’s home, and found the child was home alone.
His mother, Love Sonia Altagracia Polanco Franklin, 43, who is a church volunteer, was nowhere to be found.
Police were finally able to contact the mother, and when she arrived home, the mother was arrested.
According to Prince William County Police, the boy called 911 around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and told the dispatcher that he was hungry.
It is unclear how long he was home alone before he called the police.
Franklin was charged with felony child neglect.
She was later released from prison on her own recognizance.
Her Linkedin page shows that she works in television and video production, and is working on a children’s book.
Her son was placed in the care of a family member.
