A drunk man was arrested and charged with murder after allegedly killing his father with a machete, police in Nigeria said.
Sokoto State Police said that the incident occurred on Sunday.
According to the initial investigation, 25-year-old Bello Mallami killed and buried his 56-year-old father, Mallami Aliyu, around 2:00 a.m. A police spokesperson said that the suspect was drunk and not himself at the time of the incident.
Fatima Aliyu, the wife of the victim and mother of the suspect, said that Bello joined his father at 2:00 a.m. for the Nafilat prayers. Suddenly, he began to threaten his father.
A few minutes later, he pulled out a machete and struck his father in the head. He continued beating his father until he confirmed that he was dead. The suspect removed the body from the scene and buried it in the yard.
The victim was the director of the Centre for Islamic Studies of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.
