(Scroll down for video) A boy’s birthday card accidentally landed in a trash can.

However, a sanitation worker of Medina, Ohio, saw the purple envelope, which looked like it was never opened.

Josh Kerns took the envelope out of the pile of trash in order to investigate. His suspicions were confirmed when he found that the envelope contained an unopened birthday card.

When he opened it, Kerns was stunned to find $50 cash inside. Kerns decided to do the right thing and return the envelope to its rightful owner.

He and his supervisor, Bob Depew, took the card back to the house of Lucy Hamer. She was surprised to learn about the birthday card that her sister-in-law had sent, because she never knew it existed.

Hamer explained that her son took out all his birthday gifts from a box. However, he did not get around to open the birthday card from his aunt before the box was thrown out along with the card.

Hamer was very thankful to the sanitation workers. She said that they went above and beyond their duty to return a lost birthday card.
