A landlord who rented his apartment to students, was arrested, charged and convicted of a crime after he was caught using a spy camera to record students in the shower, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.

55-year-old Peter Woolls, advertised his apartment, which is located in a three-bedroom house in Wivenhoe, Essex for women only.

Students living at the apartment became suspicious after observing Woolls making a number of trips to a shed in the garden, which he kept locked. The wireless spy camera, which was the size of a nail head, was later found hidden in a bathroom tile in front of the shower.

The students immediately called police. Police raided the home, but they were unable to find recorded video of the students in the shower.

Police searched Woolls’ computers and memory cards, but they did not discover any footage. Woolls, a married father of five from Colchester, Essex, pleaded guilty to one charge of voyeurism.

Woolls was sentenced to one year of probation. He was also ordered to pay £1,000 ($1,600) in court costs and a victim surcharge of £15 ($22). He was not ordered to appear on a sex registry list.

Woolls claimed to have purchased the hidden camera for security reasons, but admitted that he installed it in the bathroom for his own sexual gratification.
