Two thieves received a harsh punishment after being convicted of stealing a cellphone, prosecutors in Nigeria said.
The Osogbo High Court has sentenced Babatunde Ogunjobi, 33, and Abdulgafar Yusuf, 39, to seventeen years in prison.
The judge cited the seriousness of the crime as the reason for the long prison sentence. The defendants were convicted on charges of conspiracy, theft and impersonation.
The defendants stole the phone more than four years ago inside a sports arena. The phone belonged to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun.
According to police, the defendants used the phone to impersonate the governor and to extort money from unsuspecting individuals. Eventually, the governor learned that his cellphone was being used to extort individuals, and he filed a complaint with the police.
