Several ultra-Orthodox Jewish yeshiva students reported that they received official orders to enlist in the military as Ukraine mobilizes to fend off a threat from Russia.
According to the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine and Chabad rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman, the situation is very serious.
Azman said that “we are at the brink of war,” and that the situation is worsening. The rabbis confirmed that their yeshiva students are receiving notices from the Ukrainian army.
One yeshiva student said that students will need to flee to Israel, as it is not possible to stay religious in the Ukrainian military. The is no kosher food and Shabbat is a day dedicated to cleaning.
Residents are still able to leave Ukraine with commercial airlines as most airports remain open. However, that could change at any moment.
