A man is dead after shooting himself in back of a police car, police in Louisiana said.

Iberia Parish Police said that 22-year-old Victor White III was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the initial police investigation, the incident began on Sunday night about 11:22 p.m., when local sheriff deputies were responding to a report of a fight in the 300 block of Lewis Street. While searching White, officers found him to be in possession of illegal narcotics.

White was arrested, handcuffed behind his back and transported to the sheriff’s office for processing. When they arrived at the sheriff’s office, White stopped cooperating and refused to exit the vehicle.

As one of the deputies requested assistance from other members, White produced a pistol and fired one round, hitting his back. White was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
