Several armed robbers were arrested and charged with armed robbery after allegedly stealing a large sum of money from a post office, police in the Gaza Strip said.
The Gaza Strip is known as a place of violent military confrontations, but criminal activity is rarely reported.
However, on Monday, masked robbers broke into a post office in Gaza City, shooting and wounding a security guard. The men further threatened the post office employees and made off with $500,000 in cash.
Police immediately began searching for the suspects, and the thieves were caught several hours later. Police said that they managed to recover all the stolen money.
Hamas, the party the rules over Gaza, distributed salaries to 40,000 government employees through its post offices. March salary payments are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, and therefore, post offices are currently stocked with lots of cash.
