A little girl is dead after suffering from cardiac arrest, police in the United Kingdom said.

Now, the 2-year-old’s parents have been charged after an autopsy found the heroin substitute methadone in her body, police said.

Barry Jones, 41, and Michelle King, 29, were taken into custody and were scheduled to appear before the Blackpool Magistrate’s Court for a bail hearing. Both were charged with causing or allowing the death of a child through an illegal act under the Domestic Violence Act.

Sophie Jones was taken to a hospital by ambulance from her home in Blackpool on Tuesday night, after she had suffered a cardiac arrest. She later died at the Victoria Hospital.

“Toxicology tests confirmed that Sophie Jones had ingested methadone. However, the cause of death has not yet been determined,” a spokesperson for the Lancashire Police said.
