Police intercepted a large shipment of cocaine that was hidden inside condoms, police in Germany said.
Customs officials have intercepted 12 ounces of liquid cocaine with a street value of about 40,000 euros ($55,000) before it reached the Vatican.
The drugs were hidden inside 14 condoms. Officials at the Leipzig Airport found the cocaine shipment, which came from South America. The package was addressed to the Vatican post office, which means it could have been picked up by any of the 800 residents.
German police officers delivered the package to the Vatican police, who set up a sting operation in an attempt to capture the intended recipient, but no one claimed the drugs. German authorities believe that this indicates that the person was warned.
A spokesperson for the German Finance Ministry, which oversees the customs office, has confirmed the report. Vatican spokesperson Reverend Federico Lombardi confirmed that the Vatican police had cooperated with the German police in an attempt to identify the drug traffickers, adding that the investigation remains open.
