(Scroll down for video) Nail biting is a common issue, and many people do it.

Now, one mother wants to bring more awareness about the dangers caused by this habit.

Jean Gardener wants people to know that biting nails can lead to death. That is what happened to her 40-year-old son John Gardener.

Gardener, of Wigan, Lancashire, United Kingdom, was a habitual nail-bitter and suddenly died of heart failure. Doctors said that this was a result of his nail-biting habits.

He chewed his fingertips frequently and contracted a septic infection that killed him just days after his 40th birthday. The Former football referee died while recovering from an operation to remove the tip of one finger.

Mrs. Gardener, 60, said: “We were hit very hard. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. People should be aware of the potentially fatal results derived from this habit.”

After many years of biting, Gardener had lost a lot of sensitivity in his fingers and probably did not realize how bad they were. May he rest in peace.
