(Scroll down for video) A teacher was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he raped a girl who trusted him.

The grandparents of the victim spoke out in court against the man, who was trusted to be with their granddaughter only to sexually abuse her.

Loren McDonald, 37, of San Diego, California, was a special education teacher at the Olympian High School in Chula Vista, when he was arrested. McDonald pleaded guilty to seven separate charges of sexual acts with a child.

His victim was not a student at the school. The teacher knew the family well and was trusted by all neighborhood parents.

People said that McDonald seemed to be a model citizen, who was a natural with children. “He was charming and loved to work with children,” the victim’s grandmother said.

“When young families gathered on our block, everyone loved it because Loren went off to play with the kids. We were all blinded,” she added. The grandmother also said that McDonald would read the girl books on how to recognize inappropriate touching while abusing her.

“How twisted and sick,” the grandmother told the court. Judge Timothy Walsh sentenced McDonald to 18 years in prison.
