(Scroll down for video) A family was devastated when their daughter collapsed and died after she finished a half marathon.
Cameron Gallagher, 16, of Richmond, Virginia, was an excellent swimmer and she decided to join the marathon together with her close friend.
Gallagher trained for weeks before the marathon and she seemed to be up for the challenge. Her parents were proud of her for following her dreams.
“That morning, she woke up with a smile and got ready for the marathon,” her father David Gallagher said.
Gallagher completed the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, with her best friend at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, as her family cheered them on.
According to her family, Gallagher looked exhausted, but she had a huge smile on her face as she reached her goal and completed the marathon. After she had crossed the finish line, the teen hugged her friend, told her that she was not feeling well and collapsed.
Emergency workers at the scene rushed her to a nearby hospital. Sadly, doctors were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead at 11:00 a.m.
