Jessica Dutro, 25, of Oregon, was accused of beating her 4-year-old son Zachary Dutro-Boggess to death because she thought he was gay, according to prosecutors.

The mother’s boyfriend recently pleaded guilty to his role in the child’s death. Brian Canady, 25, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault.

Prosecutors dropped more serious charges against Canady, including murder, after he agreed to testify against the his former girlfriend.

The child died just days after staff at the Good Neighbor Center homeless shelter in Tigard, called police after suspecting that the child was being severely abused.

Canady handed over a Facebook message he received from the child’s mother saying that her son walks and talks like he was gay. She told her boyfriend that he will have to “work” on the child.

Canady admitted to kicking the boy in the stomach. A doctor who examined Dutro-Boggess, testified that his bowels were ripped and he leaked into his body for at least two days, causing a deadly infection.

The boys sibling told authorities that her mother and her boyfriend repeatedly beat the her brother until he was dead. Dutro’s other three children were taken by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
