A group of nine people were arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer after they beat a police officer who was trying to break up a fight outside a courthouse, police in Nigeria said.
Ota Police identified the suspects as Abiodun Akinlawon, 25, Aremu Kazeem, 43, Damilola Akinlawon, 27, Ajala Samuel, 18, Oluwagbemi Rachael, 40, Aremu Olasunkanmi, 31, Okebile Folorunsho, 31, Sulaman Abdurasaki, 38, and Akinlawon Yetunde, 20.
All of the accused are being charged with conspiracy and two counts of assault.
“The defendants were fighting in front of the Customary Court, and the police officer with registration number 455626, was trying to stop them from disrupting the court session when they pounced on him and beat him mercilessly. As a result of the beating, the officer suffered severe head injuries,” prosecutors told a court during a bail hearing.
All nine suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. The magistrate’s court judge granted bail in the amount of N20,000 ($122) for each defendant.
