A man has died while being involved in a large fight after a politician decided to hand out free money, police in Nigeria said.
Lagos State Police said that the incident occurred Thursday, and several people were arrested.
According to the initial police investigation, the young man was beaten to death while fighting with others to share the money donated by a politician in the Ajegunle. The five suspects will be charged in connection with the fight and murder once the investigation is completed, police said.
The politician came to the city with a large amount of government cash to hand out for different projects. However, young men with no projects also lined up to get their hand on some cash.
That is when the large brawl broke out as everyone was scrambling for cash. In August, a man made an interesting last wish. He wanted money to be thrown from a helicopter so that his community members can enjoy some free cash.
A helicopter hovered above a marina in Lewes, Delaware, and people were stunned when money came flying out of the helicopter. $10,000 in $50, $20, $10, and $5 bills were thrown from the helicopter as it was carrying out the last wish of the dead person.
“Nobody really knew what was going on until it happened. People started screaming that it was money, and then everyone ran to grab some,” Kara Miele said. “Nobody was fighting one another for it, but everyone was struggling trying to grab everything they could,” she said.
The money was courtesy of the last wishes of a man named Leonard Maull. In his will, Maull wrote that he wants $10,000 to be thrown from a helicopter, one year after he died.
Lewes Police were told about the event and they sent an officer over to make sure there were no fights over the money. It was a peaceful event just the way Maull would have like it to be.
