A pastor was arrested and charged with fraud after swindling money from his unsuspecting followers by giving them false prophecies, police in Nigeria said.

Ezie Alfonso, 56, of the Celestial Church of Christ, which is located in Lagos, has been jailed after telling church members that God will make them rich.

The prophet told members that he had a vision from God that they should travel to Holland. He promised those who travel to Holland, that they will return rich and successful.

He ordered his followers to apply for passports and visas. About 16 excited members believed the prophecy, and paid an accomplice thousands of dollars in legal fees.

However, the church members realized that they have been cheated after waiting for months to receive their passports and visas. When the church members confronted the pastor he told them that his accomplice fled from the country along with their money.

Police said that so far, four people have been arrested for being involved in the scam.
