A man was arrested and charged with unlawful imprisonment after allegedly keeping his sister locked in a bedroom for several years, police in Connecticut said.
Police said that 58-year-old Arthur Gauvin kept his 56-year-old sister locked in the room in order to prevent the state from seizing the home.
She was found covered with dirt and her room smelled very bad. Officers said that they evacuated from the house after just a couple of minutes inside.
Gauvin of 10 Eleanor Road, was charged with illegal deprivation, reckless endangerment and cruelty to people. He was released after posting bail of $20,000.
Later, he was arrested a second time after threatening a family member in front of the officers. Police said that they arrived to the home after an anonymous person called the police and asked officers to check on the welfare of the 56-year-old woman.
The officers were allowed in the house by family members. While talking to Gauvin, the officers noticed a foul odor and were led to the room where they found the suspect’s sister. Her whole body was covered in human feces. She was fragile, extremely thin and looked malnourished.
Feces and urine were spread throughout the room, including the bed where she slept, police said. A dirty portable toilet was found in the room. The only window inside the room was covered with black paint.
The female victim was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. The children of the suspect were handed over to the Department of Children and Families.
