(Scroll down for video) The Jewish mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine, is fighting for his life after being shot in an unprovoked attack.
Police said that the incident occurred on Monday.
The unidentified gunmen shot him in the back as he went swimming.
Gennady Kernes, 54, underwent emergency surgery at a hospital, his office said in a statement. “Doctors are fighting to save his life,” Kernes’ spokeswoman Tatiana Gruzinsyaka said.
Before the recent unrest in Ukraine, Kernes had supported closer relations with Moscow. However, since the change of government in Kiev, Kernes had become more patriotic.
The mayor recently stated that Kharkiv should remain part of Ukraine.
