(Scroll down for video) A Minnesota lawyer can now represent himself in court after he was arrested for burning his lover.
The man was accused of dousing his girlfriend of 10 years with flammable materials before setting her on fire.
David John Gherity, 60, has been charged with felony first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree felony arson after he allegedly left his girlfriend on fire in her apartment in Burnsville.
The victim told police that she and her boyfriend were at her house when they got into an argument.
She then fell asleep on the couch after drinking and taking medication, while Gherity was stressed and upset.
After she fell asleep, police allege that Gherity doused his girlfriend with nail polish, polish remover and hairspray, and set her on fire.
Firefighters arrived at the apartment, which was full of smoke, and found the woman on fire.
The victim almost lost an ear in the fire, and suffered second and third degree burns to various parts of her body.
Gherity came to see his girlfriend at the hospital. He smelled of smoke, but denied being in the apartment when the fire began.
However, police did not believe him and he was arrested.
