A man was brutally killed by his fellow community members and his wife after he was accused of rape.
Linda Khumalo, 65, of South Africa, was a well known painter in Tshwane.
People in the community accused Khumalo of raping a 12-year-old girl, who lived in the community. Since this was not the first time that he was caught with a young girl community members decided to teach him a lesson.
The man was beaten, stoned and hacked to death.
His wife was among those throwing stones at him while his 17-year-old daughter could only stand by helplessly as her father was being killed.
“I thought he learned his lesson after what happened last time,” his wife Salome Mothapo Khumalo, 65, said.
“When I saw people beating him, I could not resist, and I threw bottles and stones, but I never thought he would be killed. I am heartbroken and I regret my part in his death,” she added.
Khumalo’s daughter Elizabeth said that she was at home when friends came to tell her that her father was being beaten in the street. Unfortunately, she was unable to help her father as he was being beaten to death by the angry crowd.
“No one deserves to die like that. If he did something wrong, they should have called the police,” Khumalo’s nephew, Bongani Khumalo, 26, said.
Three suspects between the ages of 21 and 24, were arrested and appeared briefly in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, on charges of murder.
