(Scroll down for video) Parents in New York, were shocked to receive a letter stating that the yearly school play for 5 year olds was canceled.
The reason for the cancellation was even more shocking.
School officials said that children need to spend more time preparing for “college and career.”
The Harley Elementary Primary School of Long Island, sent parents a letter to explain the decision to cancel the play.
The letter read in part: “The reason for eliminating the kindergarten play is simple. We are responsible for preparing children for college and career with valuable skills for life and we know that the best way we can do that is by becoming strong readers, writers, co-workers and problem solvers. We are making these decisions with the interests of children in mind.”
Some parents protested the school’s decision and questioned why the school is putting too much pressure on young students.
A petition started by local parents is asking the school to hold the show as they did every year.
They had more than 2,000 signatures as of Monday afternoon. The petition indicates that the school offers a half-day kindergarten and states that the school should expand the program to a full day in order to better prepare children for their academic and professional future.
