(Scroll down for video) A monkey was tragically killed by police officers, police in Missouri said.

The incident occurred on Friday night in the city of Chillicothe, after the monkey that escaped from a local business eluded police for an hour, and residents were in panic.

The monkey was shot after police officers ran out of tranquilizer darts and had no choice but to use lethal force. Officers responding to the incident said that they believed the monkey was a threat to others.

A video of the incident showed how the monkey was running at full speed before being shot. Then the monkey collapsed and someone put a blanket over it.

The capuchin monkey escaped from Johnston Rental Center at 8:30 a.m. The creature wiggled out of its cage and escaped through a vent. Police said that the owner, Bill Johnston, is licensed by the Department of Agriculture and has about 30 of them.

Attempts to sedate the monkey failed after the owner ran out of darts. That’s when police said they were forced to shoot. It was a resolution that neighbors hoped would be avoided.
