A man was arrested and charged with murder after killing his elderly mother by choking her with his necktie, prosecutors in New York said.
A defense attorney for the suspect said that the incident occurred after he spent years caring for his sick 88-year-old mother.
The defendant broke down and strangled the woman while she slept. Then he cut his wrists in a suicide attempt.
A court was told that James Olsen lacked the mental capacity to appreciate his conduct when he put one of his ties around the neck of his bedridden mother. The lawyer is pursuing an insanity defense.
The court was also told that the 59-year-old defendant was tired of the stress for caring for the woman, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Olsen’s mother, Ruth, was found by emergency workers after he called 911 from his Garden City, Long Island, home. The Nassau County prosecutors however, said that Olsen methodically planned the murder, including choosing the tie.
Ruth Olsen’s body was found in her bedroom, with the tie around her neck.
