The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was giving the honor to write a letter in a new Torah scroll that is being dedicated in Japan.

The letter writing ceremony was held on Tuesday, during a five-day trip to Japan.

Netanyahu wrote the first letters of the new Torah scroll dedicated for the Jewish community in Tokyo. Netanyahu’s trip to Japan included meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Emperor Akihito.

The prime minister also visited Japanese technology companies, such as Panasonic Corp. Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, and his son, 19-year-old Avner, also participated. Currently, there is only one Torah, therefore, the community decided to write a new Torah scroll, a project that may take more than a year and cost about $20,000.

After washing his hands, Netanyahu took a special and wrote the first letter on the parchment, the Hebrew letter bet of the word bereshit. Netanyahu also wrote the letter shin, in honor of his wife, Sara, whose Hebrew name begins with shin.
