(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested on charges of murder after allegedly killing her stepdaughter by striking her in the head, police in Virginia said.
Norfolk Police said that have charged the woman with second-degree murder for the death of the child.
24-year-old Emily Defries, was caring for her 20-month-old stepdaughter when she died. The medical examiner’s office determined that the child died from blunt force trauma and ruled the case a homicide.
Defries told police she was taking care of the victim and two other children on Sunday, in the 7000 block of Gregory Drive. She stated that she found the victim at the bottom of the stairs.
The victim was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Neighbors said that the couple had just moved into their home last month.
Defries got engaged the same day as the child died, according to her Facebook page. She is being held without bail.
