Nashville Police said that the suspect was charged with aggravated assault after a gay slur degenerated into a violent attack.
28-year-old William Eugene Massey, was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred in the Z-Mart located on Dickerson Pike. The incident began when Massey, who was holding a beer while waiting in line at the cash register, was asked “where’s the party at?”
Massey responded with a gay slur. The man, who is gay, asked Massey if he had been called the insulting name and Massey said “yes.”
Massey repeatedly asked “Now what happens?” Massey returned to his car and told someone else to help him.
The two suspects came back into the store and punched the victim in the head and face, causing the man to lose consciousness. The victim needed 13 stitches on his face.
Police reviewed surveillance video from the store and a probation officer recognized Massey. Investigators are still looking for the second suspect in the beating.
He was described as a black male in his mid to late 20s. He was wearing his hair in braided lines and appears to be approximately 5 feet nine inches tall. He and Massey left in a gold Chevrolet Avalanche.
