A man was arrested, charged and convicted of a crime for feeding birds in public, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.
Now the man has been sentenced to six weeks in jail.
Supporters of the bird feeder in Morecambe, have flocked to social networks and are asking for his release. John Wilkinson was jailed for six weeks for breach of an anti-social behavior order (ASBO) prohibiting him from feeding pigeons.
His supporters are furious with the severity of the sentence. A bird feeding protest was scheduled to show support for Wilkinson, who was given repeated warnings for feeding flocks of pigeons outside his home and other parts of the neighborhood.
Some people however, have defended the decision to jail Wilkinson of Cavendish Road. “Birds carry diseases and shouldn’t be lured into the population,” a supporter of the prison sentence said.
Neighbors have complained to the City of Lancaster for years about noise, droppings and the diseases caused by the huge number of pigeons in the area. Wilkinson was ordered not to feed any birds at home or within 100 meters of his home.
He was also prohibited from feeding any birds in England and Wales. However, he was allowed to feed birds under certain conditions. Wilkinson pleaded guilty to the charge.
