(Scroll down for video) Homeless people hoped for a good meal when they witnessed the unfortunate death of 9,000 chickens.

Thousands of chickens were burned alive in their metal cages, when a truck carrying them to the market caught on fire in Suizhou, a city in Hubei province, central China.

The 43-year-old driver, Yuan Ella, managed to free several hundred of the 9,000 birds before the fire spread, but most were burned alive.

The birds had no chance to escape and died in the flames.

Local and homeless people helped gather the chickens that managed to escape and took chickens that were still edible.

A fire truck arrived to put out the fire, but it was too late for the birds. According the initial investigation, it appears that the tires of the truck caught on fire.

“I’ve lost a lot of money, and it was terrible to see the birds being burned alive,” Ella said.
