(Scroll down for video) A young man was arrested on charges of grand larceny after being seen on video stealing a city bus and taking it for a joyride, police in New York said.
Staten Island Police said that they arrested 20-year-old Nickolas Ellias, for stealing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus from the St. George Ferry Terminal early on Monday morning.
He drove the bus 1.6 miles to his neighborhood before being caught. Ellias took the bus while the driver was on a break before witnesses called police to say that they saw the young man driving the vehicle.
The MTA used bus tracking technology to locate the bus.
They found it parked two blocks from the home of Ellias. Authorities arrested Ellias just before 2:00 a.m.
The friend who was with the suspect, recorded the crime and posted it on Facebook. Ellias told police that he wants to be a bus driver and he planned to return the bus when he was done.
The suspect’s father said that he was not surprised by the incident. “My son is obsessed with buses and has stolen a bus before. I hope he will now learn his lesson,” the father said.
A family friend said that Elias has mental health problems. Ellias has been charged with grand larceny and is being held on $10,000 bail.
