A senior officer of the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), came under fire after he accepted a wife as a gift during a ceremony last week.

Chief Operating Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng, should apologize for his role in the ritual during which he was offered to choose a wife, the District Attorney’s Office said on Monday.

“His actions are deeply troubling,” Denise Robinson, a women’s rights activist, said in a statement. On Friday, Venda chiefs gave Motsoeneng a wife, a cow and a calf during his visit to the area.

About 10 topless women formed a line in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, and Motsoeneng was asked to choose one as his wife. Motsoeneng chose 22-year-old Vanessa Mutswari.

She was photographed standing topless with Motsoeneng behind a trailer on which he loaded the cow and the calf. Mutswari however, denied becoming Motsoeneng’s wife.

In fact, she said that she is engaged to someone else. Motsoeneng said that the ceremony was not serious.
