A Maryland father killed a man in front of two young children.
Baltimore Police have charged the father with murder after allegedly killing the man in his car while his two children were sitting in the back seat, according to a department statement.
26-year-old Dwight Thomas Jenifer, was arrested shortly after committing the murder in a grocery store parking lot inside the vehicle.
According to police, Jenifer’s children were in the back seat of the car when he shot and killed the man, who was sitting in the front passenger seat.
“I did it, take me down,” the suspect said, according to court documents.
The shooting occurred around 11:00 a.m. The victim, Terrez Bowden, 46, was found sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead.
Jenifer told police that Bowden had tried to rob him and was shot during a struggle with the gun.
According to police, a witness at the scene said he heard a shot in the parking lot and saw Jennifer get out of the driver’s seat and remove his two children from the back seat. Jenifer was still on the scene when police arrived.
Jenifer claimed that Bowden had tried to rob him and pulled a gun. He told officers that there was a struggle for the gun when it went off. He also said he removed the children from the car and threw the gun away.
Officers found the .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol in a garbage can nearby.
The children were taken to the Baltimore Child Abuse Center, where they were interviewed along with their mother.
“The children said that their father shot the man in the car over a debt,” according to court documents. Jenifer was charged with first-degree attempted murder amongst other charges, and is being held without bail.
