A man and his wife are still in shock after they were betrayed by their fellow church members.
Jabulani Nkani, 40, and his wife Zanele, 39, of Cosmo City, west of Johannesburg, South Africa, were stripped and beaten by members of the church in a dispute over money.
Nkani bought a Samsung computer tablet from a friend with the agreement to make monthly payments at the end of each month.
However, the end of the month came and went, and Nkani did not pay his debt. The friend decided to take action.
“My friend came to my house to demand his money,” Nkani said. “He said he was going to leave the country and wanted to be pay right there,” he added.
When Nkani explained that he had no money, his friend left without saying a word. Nkani was later called to the church to discuss the debt issues with the church elders, so Nkani and his wife went to church.
“I had no idea about the humiliation and pain the people of God would presumably give me and my wife,” Nkani said.
Six members of the church attacked the couple and started beating them. According to Nkani, the pastor and elders left the building without caring what was happening to them.
Nkani was knocked to the floor and his clothes were ripped off. The group then attacked his wife and removed her clothes. “All we had was our underwear,” Nkani said.
“The members fled with our belongings, including my wife’s purse,” he added.
He said that he was ashamed and embarrassed by the incident. “It was the worst experience of my life,” he said.
The pastor of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church, refused to comment on the incident. The couple filed a police report, but so far, no arrests had been made.
