(Scroll down for video) An innocent man nearly died after locking himself into a maximum security prison by accident, prison officials in Illinois said.

Cook County deputies said that the man was trapped in a special visiting room in the Cook County Jail for 30 hours over the weekend.

The man came to the jail to visit his son on Saturday, something he does every week. This weekend, the visit was moved to the super-maximum security area.

The sheriff’s office said that the man went through an open door and it locked itself behind him. The man tried to bang on the concrete walls, but no one heard him.

Eventually, the man broke a sprinkler pipe and the fire department was called. That is when the man was finally rescued.

He was trapped in the room from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday until 1:00 a.m. on Monday. The man needed a few stitches on the thumb after suffering injuries from breaking the sprinkler.
