The mayor of the fishing city married the crocodile in an elaborate ceremony where the bride wore a white gown and the guests danced with the reptile.

The reptile is a princess, according to local traditions. The wedding is expected to boost the catches of fish, shrimp and other seafood along the Pacific coast.

Before the ceremony, the wedding guests walked with the bride on the streets of San Pedro Huamelula. “It is my desire to marry the young princess,” Mayor Joel Vasquez Rojas said before the couple married.

Then he danced with his new wife in his arms before guests joined in. A resident of the area explained the importance of the ritual.

The local council members paid for the wedding festivities, including the dancers and the fireworks.
