A man will have to spend the next 10 months behind bars after he was caught carrying a cigarette lighter that is shaped like a gun, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.
37-year-old Stephen White of Scotland, received the 10-month prison sentence after being spotted with the lighter, designed to look like a Beretta, at a leisure center in Clydebank.
White received the lighter as a gift from his brother-in-law many years ago, when he returned from Bulgaria. White’s brother, 42-year-old Gary, said that the family was shocked by the sentence.
They believed that White would get off with a fine. White was caught with the lighter at the Playdrome Leisure Centre.
White pleaded guilty to carrying a replica gun without a lawful authority or reasonable excuse as part of a plea bargain agreement with prosecutors.
The 1968 Firearms Act makes it illegal to have an imitation firearm in a public place. “Imitation Firearms may look realistic and can cause significant fear for the public,” police said.
