(Scroll down for video) A teen was arrested on charges of animal cruelty after being seen swinging a dog by its leash while taking it for a walk, police in the United Kingdom said.

19-year-old Alfie Loft of Hatfield was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to animals after a video posted on Facebook showed him swinging the dog over his head.

Loft was charged on Sunday by police in Hertfordshire, and subsequently was remanded into custody. The video was captured by a bystander in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

The video shows Loft lifting the dog off the ground and then repeatedly rotating it in circles over his head. He was accompanied by three other men, one of whom was also walking a dog.

In a statement Hertfordshire Police said: “Alfie Loft, 19, of Hatfield was charged today and has been remanded into custody. He will appear before Hatfield Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Hertfordshire Police would like to reaffirm that the dog owner was not involved in this incident.”

According to police, the pet owner trusted Loft to walk his dog, but had no idea what had happened to the Chihuahua until the video appeared on Facebook.

It is believed that the dog suffered no injuries, and is now safely at home with its owner.
