A young mother was arrested after she placed a tampon in the mouth of her newborn baby.
22-year-old Briana Holland of Indianapolis, Indiana, faces a host of charges including attempted murder after she tried to choke her baby and threw her baby into the trash can.
The events unfolded on Friday night, when an employee at a factory heard noises in the bathroom and thought it was an animal in need of help. She called a maintenance worker to help find the source of the noise.
The two walked over to a garbage can where they found the child in two brown paper bags. The umbilical cord was still attached. Investigators said that the newborn baby had tissue wrapped about 15 times around the neck and a tampon was stuffed into the mouth.
The child was purple, cold and wasn’t breathing. The maintenance worker cleared the blockages from the baby’s mouth, and wrapped the child in a yellow safety vest and shirt to keep the child warm.
The Indianapolis Police were called. The child was taken to a local hospital.
Investigators learned that Holland, was working when she left her job for an unusual amount of time. She gave birth to the child in the bathroom.
Holland told investigators that she was scared because of her young age, and did not know how she would support the child, according to court documents. Holland said that she had recently broken up with the father of the child. She said that she had not seen a doctor since she became pregnant.
The child is said to be in good condition while Holland is facing attempted murder charges.
