A Jewish organization requested the French authorities in a small village outside Paris, to change its name which translates into English as “Death to Jews.”

“The fact that the name was unnoticed for seventy years after the liberation of France from the Nazis and Vichy, is surprising,” Shimon Samuels of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, wrote to the Interior Minister of France.

The deputy mayor of a town named “Death To Jews” said he will not change the name because people need to respect tradition.

“It’s ridiculous. This name has always existed,” Marie-Elizabeth Secretand said.

“Nobody has anything against the Jews, of course. I’m not surprised that this issue is coming up again. Why change a name that dates back to the Middle Ages or even earlier? We must respect these old names,” she added.

Secretand also noted that the city council was asked to change the name of the city, consisting of two houses and a farm 20 years ago, but that request was denied.
