(Scroll down for video) A beauty queen is behind bars after she was caught committing workers’ compensation fraud, police in California said.
22-year-old Shawna Lynn Palmer of Riverside, was arrested after authorities saw videos on the Internet that show her competing in beauty contests wearing high heels.
She was collecting disability cash, claiming that her foot was injured.
Palmer, who participated in the Miss Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix Beauty Pageant, was arrested on Friday and charged with three felony counts of defrauding an insurance company.
She was released on $5,000 bail. Palmer worked at Stater Brothers. One day, she told her employer that she fractured her left foot.
Palmer told doctors that she could not put any weight on her foot, and she could not move in any direction, or use a shoe for any length of time.
Palmer said that she was unable to work due to her injured foot and continued reaping the benefits of workers’ compensation.
California insurance officials said that Palmer participated in at least two beauty pageants wearing high heels and walking without any sign of discomfort.
If convicted, Palmer faces up to one year in jail, three years of probation and restitution of $24,000.
