A money smuggler was rushed to a hospital after swallowing eighty bags containing more than $100,000 – police in Jamaica said.
Prosecutors said that 40-year-old Eddy Alberio Mancipe Ortega of Venezuela, was sentenced to three months behind bars after attempting to smuggle $103,500 he swallowed by packing the cash inside 80 round plastic containers.
Ortega raised the suspicion of law enforcement officers, who arrested him when he tried to board a Caribbean Airlines flight from Sangster International Airport to Trinidad and Tobago.
Ortega complained of feeling ill and was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital. Over a period of two days, the man discharged 80 plastic packages, which contained $1,200 each.
Ortega was also ordered to leave the country. This was not the first time that a money smuggler swallowed cash. Last year, two men were caught at an airport in Medellin, Colombia, after swallowing $80,000 in cash.
Authorities said that the men swallowed $80,000 wrapped in latex just like some drug traffickers hide cocaine and heroin. They were taken to a nearby hospital, and once police recovered all their cash they were booked into prison.
