Now, the mother was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to culpable homicide as part of a plea bargain agreement with prosecutors.
According to the police investigation, the mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular, put his body in a suitcase before hiding it in the woods.
34-year-old Rosdeep Adekoya, punched Kular in the head and body, and hit his body against a hard object, causing blunt trauma injury in the family home located in Edinburgh.
After her son died, she wrapped his body in a quilt before putting it in the suitcase. She dumped his remains under a bush.
The mother was also charged with obstruction for lying to police, saying that her son disappeared overnight. Hundreds of volunteers joined emergency services to look for Kular, but according to court documents the three-year-old boy was already dead.
Police officers, members of the fire service, coastguard, mountain rescue, air support and members of the public searched for the dead child.
