A spokesperson for The Central Directorate of Homeland Intelligence, said that the two Muslim girls, aged 15 and 17, were arrested in the neighborhoods of Tarbes and Venissieux.
Authorities uncovered their plan to carry out a suicide bombing inside the great Synagogue of Lyon. They were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism.
The spokesperson also said that the two teenagers never met in person, but communicated through social media sites.
“These girls were part of a network of young Islamists, who were being monitored by the security services,” the agency said.
“The Central Directorate of Homeland Intelligence is increasingly concerned about online radicalization, especially following the proliferation of videos created by jihadist groups such as Islamic state,” the spokesperson concluded.
