Two men were arrested, charged and convicted of burglary after targeting Jewish homes that were kept unlocked during Shabbat, prosecutors in the United Kingdom said.
David Fox and Patrick Chambers of Gateshead are behind bars after they admitted to breaking into four properties in just over an hour.
The two walked down a street and checked door that were unlocked on Friday night. According to Jewish law, Jews are not permitted to carry their keys on the street during Shabbat.
Chambers, 33, was jailed for 20 months, while Fox received 12 months. The Newcastle Crown Court heard how the thieves were behind a series of burglaries into the Jewish area of Gateshead.
In one home, an 81-year-old woman was present during the robbery and in another home, a four-year-old girl was in her room when the suspects entered to steal valuables.
