A man is behind bars after he assaulted a woman twice.
The 25-year-old man of Illinois, robbed the woman on the 2400 block of North Leclaire Avenue, as she rode her bike towards her home.
When he ran into her again the next day, he raped her, Chicago Police said.
Cruz first attacked the woman on Thursday night, while she was on her way home. He slapped the woman in the face and took $20 from her bra.
Then on Friday, he saw the woman on the same block. He allegedly ripped off her clothes, strangled her and raped her, prosecutors said.
A witness saw Cruz fleeing from the scene with blood on his shirt. When questioned, Cruz said that the woman was his girlfriend, according to court documents.
The witness then approached the victim, who was covered in blood. The woman told the witness that she was raped, according to court documents.
Police officers arrived a few minutes later, and arrested Cruz. The suspect continued to maintain that the victim was his girlfriend, according to police.
Cruz, of the 2300 block of Keystone Avenue, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and robbery.
Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan, ordered him to be held in lieu of $300,000 bail.
