(Scroll down for video) A mother thought that her daughter had a bad dream when she said that a man was in her room.

However, it turned out that the teen robbed the family’s home before he sexually assaulted the girl.

18-year-old Luis Contreras of California, was arrested after allegedly breaking into the house in Oxnard, and sexually assaulting the child, police said.

Officers responded to the home shortly before 2:00 a.m., after receiving the report that the 11-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted.

The man allegedly gained entry to the residence by cutting the screen to one of the windows of the house, police said.

Once inside, he allegedly took several items from the residence and placed them in a bag. He then went upstairs and entered the bedroom where two children were sleeping.

The man went over to the 11-year-old girl and assaulted her while the girl’s 6-year-old brother slept nearby.

When the girl awoke, Contreras fled the scene. During the course of the initial investigation, a call came in to alert authorities of another burglary, police said.

In the second incident, a man allegedly entered the residence through a window and took a cell phone, but fled after being confronted by the resident.

Police arrested Contreras in connection with both incidents. He was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of robbery and forcible sexual assault of a child under 14 years of age.

His bond was set at $500,000. Detectives were investigating similar crimes that have occurred in the area over the past year, which they now believe may be linked to Contreras.
