A prisoner is facing assault charges after knocking a fellow inmate unconscious because he farted in his cell, police in North Dakota said.

The Cass County Jail inmate, who is facing felony assault charges, claims that he was repeatedly called a racial slur before the assault.

The incident unfolded on Monday, between 27-year-old Ahmed Nur Adan of Fargo, and 26-year-old Timothy Lowseth of West Fargo.

According to the police investigation, Lowseth and Adan were talking outside cell number 104, when Adan suddenly punched Lowseth, knocking him down and leaving him with a cut on the back of the head.

Lowseth remained on the ground with a confused look on his face. He lost a tooth as a result of the attack.

Adan told investigators that during the past three days, Lowseth had been pushing his buttons, entered his cell and farted.

Adan also claimed that Lowseth was about to attack him, so he hit him first. Lowseth was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Adan was charged with aggravated assault.
