(Scroll down for video) A man who wanted to cash in his wife’s life insurance policy, decided to poison her with nicotine, prosecutors in California said.

57-year-old Paul Curry of San Onofre, a former nuclear engineer, was convicted on Tuesday of first-degree murder.

Curry was overcome by greed and decided to cash in on his 50-year-old wife’s $500,000 life insurance policy. Curry was questioned after the death of his wife Linda, but the case went cold, and Curry moved away and remarried.

He also collected $547,695 in life insurance and benefits, prosecutors said. According to the police investigation, Curry gave his wife a sleeping pill, then poisoned her with a nicotine injection.

According to the Medical Examiner, she had a high level of Ambien in her system, a sleep aid that was not prescribed to her, and injection marks behind the ears.

Curry denied all the allegations.
