Police have arrested the father of Phoenix, Arizona, on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of his daughter.
The father, 39- year-old Duryea Bennett, was caring for his 4-week-old twin girls as their mother, his fiance, has gone back to work.
A judge set his bail at $1 million during his initial appearance in court on Thursday.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said that the hospital staff found numerous injuries on baby Natalyah, including concussions, skull fractures, broken ribs, bite marks and injuries consistent with sexual assault.
Bennett told his 14-year-old son to call 911 after the baby stopped breathing while he was bathing her about 1:00 p.m., according to police.
Officials of the Phoenix Fire Department said that the girl, who was pronounced dead at the hospital just before 2:00 p.m., was only 35 days old.
Investigators said that the father was the only adult at home and he cared for seven children. Bennett told police that it was the first time he was alone with the twins as his fiance has gone back to work that day.
The surviving twin girl is said to be doing fine.
